Doll

Mossi, Burkina Fasso
Early 20th c.

Provenance: Noble and Jean Endicott, New York. Acquired from Tom Wheelock in the early 1980’s.

Mossi dolls are made by blacksmiths and given to young girls for play and educational purposes. The figure is made out of a single piece of wood and represents an adult woman, with distinct facial features, hairstyles, and mature female breasts; personifying motherhood. The dolls symbolize fertility and teach girls how to care for their future children. This example is adorned with incised lines representing body scarification and an elaborate hairstyle with carefully delineated braids. This doll is also embellished with a beaded necklace.
