Shaman’s Box
Iban Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
Early 20th c.
Previous collections: Irwin Hersey, New York. Donated by the above to the St. Petersburg Museum of Art, Florida, in 1989. De-acquisitioned in 2021
This is an old shaman’s box with three attached magic charms, that are carved in classic hunkered positions. At one time this shaman’s box held various magic objects inside that would be used for divination and rituals. The three figures on this box are original and very expressive. The patina is deep and smokey from storage in the long house.
