Amulet Figure
Korwar, Geelvink Bay, West Papua
Early 20th Century
Provenance: John and Marcia Friede collection, NY. Private Belgium collection.
Korwars are a link between the dead and the living: hosts of the deceased’s spirit, they can be summoned with offerings to provide advice in time of important decisions (war expedition, important fishing trip). Worn on the body and said to install courage and protection against disaster, amulet figures are an important part of Korwar society. Note the very fine carving of the expressive face and the elegance of its arched back and its stylized limbs and shield.
