Kris Hilt
Sumatra, Indonesia
19th-early 20th Century
Provenance: Old European collection
This style of handle is commonly described as a “Kingfisher” due to its resemblance, to the bird of the same name. Although it does resemble a bird, upon closer look at the handle it becomes evident that it is actually a zoomorphic figure with tiny arms and elongated fingers wrapped around its body. It’s carved from wood and covered with thick silver gilt. It is very finely carved with beautiful ornamental patterns covering its entire surface. In excellent condition and it has an aged patina and subtle wear from extensive handling.
