Hampatong
Ngaju, Dayak, Central Borneo, Indonesia
Late 19th-early 20th c.
Provenance: Collected in the 1970’s by Emile Deletaille, Brussels
Crafted in a classic hunkered posture, this particular piece stands out due to its size, notably smaller than most others of its kind. The face of this Hampatong figure exudes remarkable expressiveness, with its head turned to one side and an open mouth featuring pursed lips, conveying a palpable sense of aggression.
The figure holds a shield in one hand and a knife in the other, symbolizing its role as a guardian and protector. It is believed to shield the community from potential threats, including hostile neighboring tribes and malevolent forces such as evil spirits, diseases, and other supernatural dangers. The presence of both shield and weapon signifies the figure’s unwavering readiness to defend the community against these perilous challenges.
The patina exhibits the weathered marks of time, bearing traces of wear from exposure to the elements. Despite this, the piece remains in remarkably good condition, a testament to its enduring significance.
