Shoulder Shield

Mendi, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea
Late 19th-early 20th c.

Provenance: Alex Philips, Victoria, Australia. Harry Tracosas, Madison, WI.

The shoulder shields from the Mendi region are notably more scarce compared to their larger oval counterparts. What sets this particular example apart is its exceptional age, dating back to pre-contact times, and the remarkably well-preserved traditional pigments adorning it. Take note of the substantial patina on the reverse side and the ancient, worn-out holes near the top, which once served as anchors for a rope handle. In the context of warfare, these shields weren’t just practical tools for protection; they also embodied the warrior’s power and prestige through vibrant colors and striking designs.

In a band of Mendi warriors engaged in the same battle, one can discern a variety of shield types. Some feature diverse ochre patterns, while others remain unadorned. It’s a common sight to find a shield’s design harmonizing with the warrior’s body adornments, creating a cohesive and formidable presence on the battlefield.
