Funerary Post
Vezo, Madagascar
19th c
Provenance: J.J. Klejman Gallery, New York
Martin and Faith-Dorian Wright Collection, NY, acquired from above in 1969.
This monumental sculpture was created to commemorate an important female ancestor. She is depicted standing on a post with a tall oblong protrusion emerging from the crown of her head. The figure is superbly carved with a rounded face and richly curled coiffure, arched eyebrows and hollowed eyes. The high protrusion arising above the head is carved with geometric celestial symbols: moons, stylized stars and, on top, a sun with rays. Exceptionally hard wood, with a dry and gray weathered patina.
