Sago Pounder
Ramu River, Lower Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea
19th-early 20th century
Previous Collection: John and Marcia Friede, Rye, NY
This rare and ancient pounder is of a water bird gracefully tipping its body over with feet perched on a plinth. The patina is exceptional; the surface is deeply encrusted. There are clear signs of extensive use found on many areas of this pounder. Classic lower Sepik geometric designs are found on the neck of the bird and under its feet.
