Miniature Power Figure

Songye, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Late 19th c.

Previous Collection: Romy Rey, UK.

Presenting this exquisite miniature Songye figure, believed to have served as a personal protective charm, or possibly gracing larger village fetishes to augment their power or draw strength from them. This remarkable carving showcases the classic half-figure style, adorned with several cavities designed to hold ‘bilongo’ material, believed to be imbued with magical properties by the village’s revered Nganga shaman. The conception of this stunning piece features a beautiful classic half-figure form, showcasing an expressive “cubist style” face and gracefully positioned arms with hands resting at its waist. Adding to its allure, the aged leather wrap around its waist has seemingly melded together over time, bearing witness to the passage of ages. The patina on this figure is truly exceptional, enriched with the long-cherished application of palm oil over decades. When subjected to heat, this figure will ooze oil. Further enhancing its enchantment, the head of the figure retains remnants of the magical substances once held within its original dyker horn. On its sides, you’ll find metal attachments resembling a miniature gong and beaters, adding to the intricate details and cultural significance of this artifact.
