Amulet Mask
Lower Sepik River region
Early 20th c
Provenance: Belgian Collection
This amulet mask from the Lower Sepik would have been suspended from a small pierced hole that was once at the top of its head, but has since worn away with time. Stone carved and very old, this mask’s facial features are particularly enchanting, exuding a quiet aggressiveness. Carefully carved, the hooked nose and fierce eyes are particular to the Lower Sepik and the slight open mouth only enhances its emotion. Red ochre pigment is still visible, and help define its expressiveness.
