Pair of Amulet Figures
Grasslands, Cameroon
Early 20th c
Previous Collection: Drs. Jean and Noble Endicott
Of naturalistic style these diminutive figures functioned as personal protective amulets against forms of evil and harm. Sometimes kept in bags or worn around the neck or body, these charms were an important part of everyday life. The compact yet detailed bodies and expressive faces suggest they were carved by a skilled sculptor. Well-worn piercing lugs can be found behind each figures neck, which facilitated the owner’s ability to attached or wear the amulets. Carved from a medium density wood; with a dark handled patina.
