Amulet Figure

Murik Lakes, Coastal Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea
19th c

Field collected in the Murik Lakes region in 1936 by Louis Pierre Ledoux, Lincoln Park, NJ.
By descent to family member.

This very fine amulet figure attracts attention with its striking long pierced nose that descends all the way to the figure’s base. The figure is classically carved with oval eyes, pierced ear lopes and conical headdress.  Its body is strong with well carved hands and flexed legs. Its back also has defined shoulder blades. The entire figure still retains the red ochre pigment it was originally painted with.
