Divination Object

Yoruba, Nigeria
19th c.

With its haunting face and lustrous patina, this Eshu figure stands out among most examples seen on the market today. The reddish-brown hue of the wood is striking, glistening with the oils that have been absorbed over time. The body is adorned with abstract geometric designs, while the facial features are nearly obscured from extensive ritual wear. Metal inserts accentuate the eyes, enhancing the figure’s mystical presence. Remarkably, the original leather wrap still remains intact around the neck.

Eshu serves as the Yoruba deity of the crossroads, communication, and chance—a powerful intermediary between the spiritual and human realms. Figures such as this were used by diviners (babalawo) in ritual contexts to invoke Eshu’s guidance, protection, and favor during consultations with the Ifa oracle. Their presence was essential in ensuring that messages from the spirit world were properly received and interpreted.
