Passport Mask, ma go
Loma, Liberia
Early 20th century
Provenance: Jacques Blanckaert collection, Brussels
The tribes of Liberia excel at creating miniature masks and produce more than any other culture in West Africa. The variety in form and expression is extensive. Passport masks created by the Loma are very rare to find. These miniature personal masks replicate the forms of masks used in powerful ceremonies and dances. They protect the owner and are generally carried on the person. This mask was most likely placed on a shrine and seldom carried. This examples rich encrusted patina makes it all the more intriguing, and attests to the numerous ritual offerings and libations it received to enhance its power and effectiveness. At the top of the mask six cowrie shells have been tied and adhered to its surface. Very thin disk-shaped beads have been strung and attached through the piercing found on one of its sides.
