Ancestor Figure, Adu zatua
Central Nias, Indonesia
19th century
Provenance: Old Belgian collection
Nias ancestor figures are displayed inside a chief’s house as a protective device. Representing deceased ancestors, these figures were beautifully carved. Reminiscent of cubist style sculpture, this example is depicted with great tension and posture. Its forked royal crown, chiefly adornments, delicately carved hands and feet, and symmetrical facial features are elegantly depicted, suggesting the figure’s importance. Its thick and curvaceous legs viewed in profile create a sense of dynamic movement. The deep patina is the result of generations of use.
