Neck Rest, kali hahapo

Tongan Islands
19th century

Elegant and timeless in form, this neck rest from the Tongan Islands is carved from a single piece of hardwood. Neck rests were used only by high dignitaries as pillows and helped keep a man’s elaborate hair style from being disturbed while sleeping. This example is in excellent condition, and has a very fine dark and deep patina from use.

Length: 17 ¼ in / 43.8 cm
