These stone figures found in Mende fields are from an ancient culture and are deeply revered by the discoverers. Wood reliquaries are created to house and cherish these figures. The eyes on this example are very representative of the depictions of ancient Portuguese ‘afro’ ivories. This example is seated, with its hands covering its mouth, which is scarce; in addition, its diminutive size makes it all the more special. There are no restorations and in overall excellent condition.
