Gunpowder Container
Toba Batak, North Sumatra, Indonesia
Late 19th–early 20th c.
Buffalo horn
Old European collection
This finely carved Toba Batak gunpowder container is executed in richly patinated buffalo horn, its crescent-shaped body animated by dense, flowing scrollwork incised across the surface. The design is rhythmic and continuous, with curling vegetal motifs and dotted infill creating a sense of movement that follows the natural curve of the horn. At one end, the form resolves into a stylized animal head—elongated and abstracted—its projecting snout and open mouth lending a subtle dynamism to the silhouette. Rising at the center is a Singha Head finial.
Such containers were used to store gunpowder for hunting and warfare, suspended from the body for easy access. Beyond their practical role, they were also expressions of identity and status, often personalized through intricate carving.
