Ancestor Figure, iene
Leti Island, Indonesia
19th c.
Provenance: Jan Zijlstra, stationed on Sumatra in the 1920’s. By descent to family member.
This small yet exquisitely carved male figure originates from Leti Island in eastern Indonesia. Traditionally kept within the home, such figures represent recently deceased family members and served as vessels through which a spirit could temporarily reside—receiving offerings or being consulted on important matters.
Carved with elegant lines and meticulous attention to detail, the figure is depicted seated with arms folded and resting atop its knees. Traces of finely carved elongated earlobes and a crown remain visible, hinting at its once-pronounced features. The surface bears a rich, tactile patina from years of handling, while the back reveals the striking natural grain of the specially selected wood—further emphasizing the sacred care taken in its creation.
