Amulet Figures
Kayanic, Dayak, East Borneo, Indonesia.
Early 20th c.
Provenance: Noble and Jean Endicott, New York
This amulet most likely served as a stopper for a bamboo medicine container. It takes the form of an embracing couple whose heads are turned in opposite directions. The sculpture is dynamic as there is a beautiful flow of movement as the arms and legs of the couple intertwine. The deep patina is very dark, developed over time from extensive handling.
