Head Crest
Ekoi, Cross River, Nigeria- Cameroon Border
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Ludwig Bretschnieder, Munich. Old American collection
This fine head crest is carved from wood, covered with skin and human hair. The skin on these head crests are rubbed with palm oil and exposed to sunlight prior to being used; which produces a lustrous patina. The depth to the patina on this example suggests a lengthy period of use. The piercing eyes and open mouth expression on its face make for a very powerful and dramatic presence. There are some natural creases and folds in the skin, but in otherwise excellent condition.
