Ritual Spoon
Ifugao, Hapao region, Philippines
Early 20th century
Provenance: Old American collection.
By descent to family member
This is a classic example of an Ifugao spoon. The figure possesses beautiful balance with curves and sweeps in the body; as well as an expressive face with a classic circular double top knot above the head.
The deeply shaped bowl is elegant as well, and appears to have been discolored over time from use. Wrapped around the figure’s forearms there are two bracelets made with copper wire. The spoon has a deep honey brown patina and it is varied.
