Passport Mask
Bassa, Liberia
Early 20th century
Provenance: Jane Steinsnyder collection, Philadelphia, acquired in the 1960’s, (old inventory numbers, 1640, painted in white on the back of the mask). Thomas Murray, California. Private New Jersey collection, acquired from above in the early 1990’s
Passport masks are often small renditions of larger masks that can harness power from an ancestor spirit. These small masks can fit into the palm of a hand and are carried on the person in order for the carrier to benefit from its protective powers. This particular example is very well carved; its open protruding mouth imbues power. The patina is dark and varied. A very fine example, that is in excellent condition.
