Betel Nut Crusher
Lombok, Indonesia
19th-early 20th century
Provenance: Fred ten Houten collection, The Netherlands, (1916-1995). Gerrardus Museum van der Leeuw, Groningen, The Netherlands
Its intense body crouches, as if in a Buddha like pose; shielded from above by an abstracted Naga/serpent. The handle is carved from a translucent honey colored buffalo horn. The face is hauntingly powerful and expressive. Although diminutive in size this sculpture has the presence of a large and imposing work of art. Its beautiful deep patina attests to its abundant use and great age. In excellent condition.
