Ancestor Figure
Ata oro, Indonesia
19th c.
Provenance: Carlo Monzino Collection, Lugano. Philipp Konzett, Vienna
The people of Ata Oro Island carve ancestral figures in male and female pairs, distinguished by their traditional garments—loincloths for men and skirts for women. These powerful figures serve both protective and spiritual roles, safeguarding the chief’s house from thieves and playing a vital part in local rituals. They were traditionally suspended from a rack affixed to a house post, ensuring the protection of the lineage associated with the dwelling.
This particular figure represents the male of such a pair. Its smooth, dark patina accentuates its bold yet harmonious features. Around the waist, the patina is noticeably lighter, as the area was originally covered by a cotton loincloth, preventing the natural accumulation of patina over time.
