This exquisite piece, known as a “Huamp” in the Boiken language, hails from the Prince Alexander Mountains in the East Sepik Province, home to the Boiken people. Crafted from a single piece of hardwood, this sizable and meticulously carved bowl/plate boasts a shallow interior bowl and a convex exterior adorned with intricate high relief carvings. Dominating its surface is a stylized depiction of a totemic Flying Fox, also known as a Fruit Bat. At the heart of the Flying Fox motif lies an upraised circle housing a clan design. Evidencing its age, the bowl displays a deep, rich patina accumulated over time through extensive handling and use. Complementing its beauty is a custom-made stand, enhancing its display.
