William Holden collection, acquired in the 1960’s. Palm Springs Art Museum, Ca., gifted in the 1980’s by the above, inv. DM-50.12-82-A-AF. De-acquisitioned by the Museum in the early 2000’s. Private American collection since then.
This classically rendered Dan mid-sized mask known as a family mask possesses a deep aged patina from generations of use and storage. The face is elegant with its naturalistic features. Of note is the raised vertical ridge on its forehead, and the original aluminum attachments in its mouth. Carved from very hard wood the back of the mask shows fine adze work.
