Amulet Figure
Bamileke, Grasslands, Cameroon
20th century
Provenance: Noble Endicott collection, NY.
Of naturalistic style this diminutive figure functioned as a personal protective amulet against forms of evil and harm. It’s carved with classic Bamileke facial features; protruding eyes, nose and mouth. Both its arms are bent, one going across its belly and the other raised beneath its chin. Sometimes kept in bags or worn around the neck or body, these charms were an important part of everyday life. The compact yet detailed body and expressive face suggests this was carved by a skilled sculptor. In excellent condition, it also exhibits a deep and dark patina from extensive handling.
