Stopper to Bamboo Medicine Container
Nagju Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
19th-Early 20th Century
Provenance: Noble and Jean Endicott collection, NY, acquired in the 1990’s
This intriguing medicine stopper is larger than most found on the market today. It consists of a figure riding on top of a stylized feline creature. There is great tension and movement on both, the human rider’s head is turned in one direction while the feline turns the other way. Another stylized animal image can be found carved in high relief at the bottom of feline’s legs. The patina is varied and encrusted from years of ritual use and libations. In excellent condition.
