Hampatong
Tanjung or Benua Dayak, South-East Borneo
Late 19th-early 20th Century
Provenance: Karob collection, Boston acquired in the 1970’s
Published: Orientations, January 1981, Squatting Figures of Borneo, fig. 4
Conceived in classic hunkered position, this example stands out because of its rare size; it is smaller than most examples. The face on this Hampatong is very expressive and the post is beautifully decorated showing the great skill of the carver. The patina is weathered and there are traces of lykin from outdoor exposure. In very good condition.
