Heddle Pulley
Senufo, Ivory Coast
Early 20th C.
Provenance: Old New York collection, acquired in the 1970’s, by descent to family member
In use on a narrow strip loom, this pulley was both functional and aesthetic. It eased the movements of the heddles in separating the warp threads to allow the shuttle carrying the weft thread to pass through. Senufo pulleys often feature a stylized hornbill bird. The hornbill is one of the animals the Senufo associate with the creation of the world. This example is both beautifully carved and very well worn. Clear evidence of its age can be seen by the erosion on one side and the extreme wear on the pierced holes found on the bottom of its legs and its neck. The patina is dark and varied.
