Dance Mask
Java, Indonesia
Early 20th c
Provenance:
Kleier collection, Munich, acquired in the 1960’s.
Javanese masks are traditionally used for dance performances, called Topeng in Indonesian. The masks are brightly colored and the designs and colors used follow a traditional style. This example appears to have been exposed to the outside elements for an extended period of time; its weathered surface casts a haunting visage. There are still some areas on the mask’s surface where remains of the original pigment are still present.
