Metal Figure

Gan, Burkina Faso
Likely 19th–early 20th century
Cast metal

Provenance: Andre Blandin, Provence, France

This small but commanding metal figure from the Gan culture of Burkina Faso is defined by its bold, muscular modeling and expressive posture. The figure stands with a powerful forward stance, its weight grounded through broad feet and thick, forcefully rendered legs. Oversized arms and hands dominate the composition, emphasizing strength, action, and presence rather than naturalistic proportion.

One arm is raised and bent, while the other holds a twisted stick or beater. Slung over the shoulder is a rounded object, plausibly interpreted as a drum or percussion element, suggesting the figure may represent a ritual musician, performer, or spirit associated with sound, rhythm, and ceremonial activity.

The surface displays a richly worn, deeply aged patina, with areas of smoothing and abrasion consistent with long handling, ritual use, or prolonged exposure. This softened surface enhances the sculptural volumes.
