Handle from a Betel Nut Cutting Knife
Bali, Indonesia
Early 20th c.
Wood
This sculptural handle from a Balinese betel nut cutting knife is carved in the round with a densely layered figural composition, transforming a utilitarian object into a powerful work of ritual sculpture. The form rises vertically, animated by stacked Demon-figures whose intertwined bodies create a continuous rhythm of movement and tension. Limbs, torsos, and expressive faces emerge from the surface in high relief, giving the handle a strong sense of narrative compression and tactile intensity.
The carving is deeply worn from prolonged handling, its contours softened and polished through repeated use. A rich, dark patina coats the surface, with remnants of pigment still visible in recessed areas.
