Shield

Kirdi people, Cameroon
Early 20th c

Provenance: Jean and Noble Endicott collection, NY

This beautifully crafted leather shield from Cameroon features a stunning geometric pattern that has been “stamped” into the leather, creating a raised surface on the face of the shield. Traces of red pigment can be seen throughout the design, adding an extra level of visual interest. These shields were traditionally used by the Kirdi people as a form of protection during combat, but also held ceremonial and cultural significance.
