Terracotta Figure
Yoruba, Nigeria
19th c
Provenance: Eric Robertson, New York City
This is a unique example from the Yoruba terracotta art tradition. Dating to the 19th Century, this small figure sits, with his hands clasped in front of its belly, like many other figures in the Yoruba tradition. He is contemplative, with attached cowrie shells for eyes and a distinctive nose. Its surface is heavily encrusted, possibly indicating it received repeated ritual libations while it was stored on a sacred shrine.
