Flores, Indonesia
19th – early 20th c
Provenance: Catherine Cootner, San Francisco
Throughout Indonesia, the creation and use of protective charms for defense and healing is well documented. Examples from Flores are quite rare to find. This seated male figure, carved in the style of a miniature Ana Deo Post Figure may be small in size: nonetheless it still has a monumental presence. It was clearly carved by a skilled hand, who was attentive to every detail. It’s dark and layered aged patina is simply brilliant.
