Standing Figure
Murik Lakes, Coastal Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea
19th c
Provenance: Field collected in the Murik Lakes region in 1936 by Louis Pierre Ledoux, Lincoln Park New Jersey. By descent to family member.
This dynamic figure with a tall headdress was probably a decoration on a large seagoing canoe used for coastal trade in the area. The figure has great presence, its posture is filled with tension and the spirit of the figure can be felt by just gazing into its face. Its original red ochre pigment still decorates the entire sculpture. A very similar example can be found published in “New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection”, fig. 53.
