This small yet finely carved female ancestor figure originates from Leti Island in eastern Indonesia. Traditionally kept within the home, such figures represent recently deceased family members and functioned as vessels through which the spirit could temporarily reside—receiving offerings or being consulted on important matters.

The figure is depicted seated, with arms resting atop the knees and a ceremonial bowl held on the lap. Elongated earlobes and a carved crown signify the elevated status of the individual represented. Executed with elegant lines and careful attention to detail, the sculpture displays a rich, tactile patina developed through years of handling. The reverse reveals the pronounced natural grain of the carefully selected wood, underscoring the ritual importance and deliberate craftsmanship invested in its creation.
