Dance Mask

Western Nepal
19th-early 20th c.

Provenance: Irwin Hersey collection, NYC

In the valleys and foothills of the Himalayas in western Nepal, known as the “Middle Hills,” ancient pre-Buddhist shamanistic traditions continue to thrive among tribes such as the Magar, Gurung, and others. These traditions involve rituals with shamans, drums, dream trances that transport individuals into “other worlds,” and the use of masks.

The shaman mask featured here is characterized by its simplicity yet profound expressiveness. Carved from hard, brown wood, it showcases a prominent, domed forehead, large oval eyes, a broad nose, and hooked-shaped ears. The open mouth reveals sharp, pointed teeth. The faceting and knife marks on the lower half of the mask complement its overall design. Despite its abstract simplicity, the mask exudes a remarkable powerful presence. Both the front and back surfaces display a dark, heavily encrusted patina, a testament to its extensive use and age.
