Male Initiation Mask, Galut
Abelam, East Sepik Province,
Papua New Guinea
Early 20th c
Provenance: Old European collection
Often mistakenly referred to as Yam Masks, this small mask with woven chains would have been worn on the backside of a young male initiate’s headdress during an important ceremony. The mask is made from tightly woven cane, and still retains its original decorated colors of encrusted ochre, orange and Reckitt’s Blue pigments. In excellent condition.
