Hampatong
Ngaju Dayak, Central Borneo, Indonesia
Early 20th century
Provenance: Irwin Hersey, New York, acquired in Indonesia in the 1970’s
Conceived in classic hunkered position; this example stands out because of its rare size; it is smaller than most examples. Its size and patina suggests it was kept inside the longhouse. The face on this figure is very expressive. A protective bird like juata spirit is positioned on its back. The figure sits atop a stylized Chinese porcelain trade jar. The patina is darkened an varied suggesting it was repeatedly handled. Carved from ironwood, it’s in excellent condition.
