Fertility Figure
Bangwa, Cameroon
19th-early 20th century
Previous collections: Jacques Kerchache, France. Ana and Antonio Casanovas, Madrid. American Collection and then by descent to family member
Standing on bent legs with a protruding belly with hands classically placed there, this figure is an early and very expressive example. The rounded head slightly tilts back, adding tension and movement to the sculpture. The patina is deep and encrusted from generations of use. Authentic figures of this type are becoming very scarce on the market, especially ones that possess exceptional qualities. The figure is carved from hard wood and it’s in excellent condition.
