Gun Powder Container
Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia
Early 20th c.
Provenance: Old European collection
This finely carved gunpowder container from Sumatra is made from polished water buffalo horn, a material prized for its strength, smooth surface, and deep, lustrous patina. The cylindrical body is richly engraved with bands of geometric ornament and a central swirling motif—designs that echo the graphic vocabulary found throughout Batak ritual objects and textiles.
But what makes this example truly special is the finial. Rising from the top are three stacked ancestral heads, each separated by carved collars. This tiered head motif is exceptionally rare among Batak powder horns, where a single head or simple stopper is far more common.
