Betel nut crusher

Lombok, Indonesia
Early 20th c.

Provenance: Jan Zijlstra, stationed on Sumatra in the 1920’s. By descent to family member.

This elegant betel nut cutter from Lombok, demonstrates how even utilitarian objects in Indonesia were transformed into works of sculpture. The handle is carved in the form of a small seated figure with elongated limbs and a contemplative posture. The hands rest on the knees, while the head tilts slightly forward, giving the figure a calm, introspective presence. The smooth, dark surface and subtle translucency suggest the handle was carved from buffalo horn, though in some Lombok examples similar forms were also carved from dense hardwood.

The sculptural figure rises above the iron blade of the cutter, which was used to slice betel nut—an essential element in the widespread tradition of sirih chewing throughout Indonesia. Over time, the horn surface has developed a deep, lustrous patina, polished by handling and use.
