Passport Mask
Dan, Liberia
19th-early 20th century
Provenance: American collection and then by descent to family member
Miniature versions of the Gagon style mask are much scarcer than the full sized examples. This mask was most likely part of a personal shrine. The mask symbolizes the transformation from man to bird. Both the upper and lower beak is covered with animal skin and hair. This example is skillfully carved, and shows great age and use. The surface has a deep and dark encrusted surface from repeated ritual libations.
