Talipoon Mask
Boiken, East Sepik Province,
Papua New Guinea
Early 20th Century
Provenance: German collection
This is a fantastic and very rare example of the type of currency used in the East Sepik Provence mainly for inter village transactions and bride price payments. The mask is made of very finely woven rattan; and its heart shaped face with extended mouth and eyes, are just a few of its distinctive traits. What makes this mask so unique are its raised arms on both sides and the outward projecting bird head on the top of the mask. There are very few known masks with both of these features. The mask also has remains of old pigments.
