Stopper from a Shaman’s Medicine Container
Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia
19th-early 20th century
This is a fine example of a wooden stopper to a guri-guri container. Classic in conception but dynamic in execution; this object possesses true individuality with its fine sculptural quality and attention to detail. The large rider exudes gravitas with its naturalistic yet stoic expression. A smaller hunkered figure sits attached to the rear of the Singa. The patina is deep and encrusted from decades of use.
