Dap-Dap Mortar

Murik Lakes, PNG
19th Century
Previous Collection Leo Fortess, Hawaii

This beautifully conceived female figure is of elegant elongated form. A wonderful classic face is complimented by whimsical body with exaggeratedly long arms grasping a bowl on top of the figures head. The posture of this figure is symbolic of the carrying of food by women for distribution during ceremonial occasions. This piece has a wonderful deep patina from use and still has the original red pigment intact. In excellent condition.

This mortar stands 7.5 inches tall.
