Korwar, Amulet Figure
Western New Guinea, Geelvink Bay
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Old Dutch Collection

Unique for a Korwar amulet figure, this example is large, approaching the scale of a fully size ancestor figure. The figure itself sits on a base which still retains the natural bark from the tree. The enlarged head and arrow-shaped nose are distinctive artistic traits of the highly conventionalized Korwar tradition. Portraying a recently deceased ancestor, these figures were some of the most important to Geelvink Bay cultures. Depicted seated with it’s chin resting on its hands, small ornate decorations are visible on the sides of the head and arms.

Height: 9 inches
